Case Study #2
Summary
JoJo spent decades helping others. After an ethics complaint, she felt broken and questioned her worth. Journaling, faith, and time helped her rediscover self-love and separate her identity from her career.
Key Quote
Even Jesus needed to retreat to the mountains.
When Identity Collapses and Stillness Becomes Sacred
JoJo is a seasoned counselor in her early 60s. Before becoming a therapist, she spent years as an elementary school teacher, mentor, and caregiver. She entered the counseling profession later in life—driven by deep compassion and a calling to walk alongside others.
She is warm, spiritually grounded, and generous with her time. She still believes counseling is sacred work. But somewhere along the way, JoJo began to lose herself in it.
🌫️ Her Unique Attributes
JoJo has what younger clinicians would call “wisdom energy.” Her clients love her for her storytelling, her calm voice, and her sincere belief in their worth. She has always seen herself as a strong woman—resilient, dependable, and called by God to be of service.
She doesn’t talk much about burnout. For most of her career, she thought fatigue was just part of the job. You pour out, then refill when you can. But when a client filed an ethics complaint against her, everything shattered.
💔 Where she got stuck
The complaint shook her to the core. JoJo suddenly questioned everything:
Was I wrong to care so deeply?
Have I been doing this all wrong?
What happens to my identity if I walk away from this work?
JoJo wrestled quietly with the weight of money
She withdrew emotionally and lost confidence. She described seasons when “all my strength leaked out”—when even getting up felt heavy.
She feared retirement not because of finances, but because of meaning. Who would she be without this work?
🙏 Her Turning Point
JoJo began journaling again—something she hadn’t done since her teaching days. She started writing prayers. Processing her grief. Naming her confusion.
She stopped trying to figure it all out and let herself sit in the not-knowing. Her faith didn’t “fix it.” But it held her.
One day during a long walk, she remembered a passage from Scripture:
Even Jesus withdrew to the mountains to pray.
That was her turning point.
If rest was good enough for Jesus, why did she believe she had to work through the pain in silence?
🌿 Strategies That Helped JoJo Reset
Faith-Led Reflection
She wrote down her fears. Not to erase them—but to offer them up. She no longer expected herself to be the perfect example. She allowed herself to be human.
Reclaiming Journaling
JoJo’s journal became a sacred space. Not productivity. Not planning. Just presence. She even added colored pens and Scripture margins for creativity and prayer.
Financial Boundaries
Over time, she began to see her rates not as reward, but as right relationship — a rhythm of giving and receiving that honored the sacredness of her work.
Exploring Life Beyond Therapy
She started wondering: Who am I when I’m not a counselor? She planted herbs. Listened to nostalgic music. Dusted off old books and photos. She remembered pieces of herself she had buried.
Reframing the Ethics Trauma
She worked with a spiritual director who helped her reframe the ethics complaint—not as proof of failure but as part of the landscape of long service. A wound, yes—but not a disqualifier.
Slow Reconnection with Peers
JoJo didn’t jump back into supervision groups. But she reached out to two former colleagues for long-form phone calls. No advice. Just shared experience. It meant everything.
✨ Who JoJo Is Now
JoJo is still deciding whether to retire. But the decision no longer feels like a death sentence.
She sees transition as sacred—not shameful.
She no longer feels guilty resting.
She no longer thinks value is tied to being needed.
She is learning that spiritual maturity includes release.
And in her words:
“I don’t know what’s next. But I’m not afraid to listen anymore.”
